Our Love Could LIght the World - TLC Review + Giveaway!

Synopsis (from Amazon): You know the Dugans. They’re that scrappy family that lives down the street. Their yard is overgrown, they don’t pick up after their dog, their five children run free—leaving chaos in their wake—and the father hasn’t earned a cent in years. The wife holds them together on her income alone. You wouldn’t want them for neighbors—but from a distance, they’re quite entertaining.

You can tell from the empty bottles lying under the bush out front that alcohol is an issue in the household—and all things considered, you can hardly blame the wife for leaving one day.

Without her at the helm, the rest carry on the best they can. Their strong sense of family keeps them going. They help—and in some cases, rescue—each other as they struggle for a better life. And while they never follow the rules, or completely conquer the adversity with which they’re faced, they do manage to meet their challenges—and even earn some much-needed respect. Along the way, they might even make you proud.

Set in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, the twelve linked stories of Our Love Could Light the World depict a dysfunctional family that’s messy and rude, cruel and kind, and loyal to the end.

My Review:  I enjoyed Our Love Could Light the World and here is a summary of why I did!

Favorite Character(s):  My favorite two characters were Lavania (Mrs. Dugan) and Patty Dugan her sister-in-law.  They were both very strong women that were always there for their families and never gave up.  They had their struggles, but were still able to pick themselves (and their families) up and continue on.  Their lives where not perfect, far from it.  They did't always make the best choice, but they moved on and learned from their past.

Setting:  I really enjoyed the setting of Our Love Could Light the World since I am currently living in the Finger Lakes region.  It was fun to read a story from this area of New York.  Most books related to New York, take place in NYC!

Fast read/slow read:  This book was such a fast read.  I love fast reads!  The book is a collection of short stories by different members of the Dugan family.  They are all connected and interwoven.  I wasn't sure how I would like a book of short stories, but it works so well.

Cover:  It's perfect. Seriously, there are so many houses this could be in Upstate New York.  I loved the cover.

One Sentence Summary: Our Love Could Light the World is a collection of stories about love, divorce, aging, alcoholism, growing up, abuse, and loving your family no matter how dysfunctional.

Would I Read Other Books by the Author: I would definitely read other books by Anne Leigh Parrish.  Lucky for me, she has written other books!

The Amendment, TLC Book Tours + Giveaway

~ I received no compensation and opinions are 100% my own or my family. ~

Synopsis:  When Lavinia Starkhurst's husband is killed in a freak accident, she takes to the open road and meets a number of strangers, all with struggles of their own. Through these unexpected and occasionally hilarious encounters, Lavinia reflects on her past deeds, both good and bad, explores her two marriages, her roles as caregiver and wife, hoping all the while for self-acceptance and something to give her new life meaning.

One (or more) Sentence Summary:  I really wasn't sure where the story was going to go with The Amendment.  After reading the first chapter, I thought it was going to be focused on a women losing her husband suddenly and marrying his best friend.  Boy was I wrong and pleasantly so!  The Amendment is about Lavinia losing her husband suddenly (got that part right), but I somehow missed in the synopsis the unexpected and hilarious cast of characters she stumbles upon during a trip cross country. I honestly can see myself running into such people.  I am not sure I would have been as trusting as Lavinia!  As she encounters these "unusual" people during her trip, they allow her to reflect on her past life and the roles she played.  By the end, she finds the new meaning of her life without her second husband.

I really did enjoy being on the journey cross country with Lavinia and all reflection of her past.  I do think she was a bit naive and too trusting in today's world, but that made me like her even more.  I didn't realize that there is another book with Lavinia as the main character.  It is Women Within, and I must read it.  Lavinia is hoot (with a history) and I would like to read more about her!

Would I Read Other Books by the Author:  I have read Our Love Could Light the World a long time ago! I really enjoyed it!  I would like to read the first book about Lavinia, Women Within. OMG - I just realized the Lavinia married a Dugan, the family from Our Love Could Light the World....holy cow, I for sure need to read Women Within!  What else have I missed?

Parrrish is the author of five previously published books of fiction: Women Within, a novel (Black Rose Writing, 2017); By The Wayside, stories (Unsolicited Press, 2017); What Is Found, What Is Lost, a novel (She Writes Press, 2014); Our Love Could Light The World, stories (She Writes Press, 2013); and All The Roads That Lead From Home, stories, (Press 53, 2011). Parrish's fourth novel, and seventh book of fiction, Maggie's Ruse, will be available in the fall of 2019. It is a prequel to The Amendment, focusing on Lavinia's twin daughters, Marta and Maggie Dugan. Adeptly probing the angst and uncertainly of artistically inclined millennials, Maggie's Ruse also explores the psychic connection between identical twins and shows both how deep and fragile that bond can be.
