Royally BeSwitched - Interview with Molly Snow

I am so excited to have Molly Snow - the author of the BeSwitched Series here at Seaside Book Nook.  We are talking today about her latest book in the series - Royal BeSwitched!

SynopsisHexed from a small suburb in the U.S. back to 1700's France, a magical black cat, Surla, and her human crush, Jax Morreau, have no idea what troubles await.

When Jax’s distant relatives, a lowly maidservant and a prince, miss their chance at love, evil gains a stronghold in the Morreau Kingdom. It’s up to the duo from the future to reset the course of love before it’s too late. Surla, the cat, will do anything, including switch bodies with the maidservant, to clean up the royal mess.

Author Interview:  Molly Snow -  I had a lot of fun putting together scenes for the latest in The BeSwitched Series, Royally BeSwitched. Since it takes place in the 1700s at a castle, and has magical elements, fight scenes really came alive. Jax, a handsome teen warlock is gifted with strength. Here is a sneak peek into just one of the action sequences in Royally BeSwitched:

The king ran into the queen’s chamber, with a dreadful expression, locking the door behind him. Piercing screams rang out from the servants’ quarters on the other end of the estate. “What is happening?” His eyes fixed on the scene before him through the window.
“We are being attacked,” Nicolas said, trying to move a heavy dresser toward the window.
“By black magic no doubt,” Jax said. His ring shined its red radiance as he helped push the dresser. It easily slid along the floor to the window. He dashed around the room, picking up other large furniture, tossing them next to the windows and door, some cracking and breaking as they slammed against the floor.
Idis picked up her familiar into her arms. “Surla, you ready for some magic?”
“Yes, of course. What should we do?”
Everyone watched in anticipation, seeing if the barrier would be sufficient. A skeleton foot appeared, outside, dangling above the window. The skeleton suddenly bent over and slammed its white knuckles against the window, causing a crack in the glass, which branched into a dozen trails.
“Aaah!” Surla screamed.
The furniture wasn’t high enough to guard against the skeleton and the massive blow. Thunder boomed and lightning crashed. They could see in the flash of white, black mist seeping out from the skull’s hollow eyes. It reached back and slammed into the glass again, this time breaking through, shards flying across the chamber. There was a sudden banging at the door as the skeleton at the window climbed through, leaping on top of a dresser like a daddy-long-leg spider, hunching over his long appendages. Right behind it came another skeleton, landing like another spider.
Jax broke off a bedpost and, using it like a club, he bashed in the skull of the one nearest to him. The skeleton disintegrated before him into gray dust.
“Son! Watch out!” the king called.
The other skeleton screeched before clamping its cracked teeth against Nicolas’s shoulder. The prince struck it with his fist, groaning in pain and anger. Slamming himself against a wall, bones popped apart, clattering into a heap.

SBN: What do you like to do when you are not writing and promoting books?
MS:  I love to relax with a good reality show and popcorn, which I haven't done in a while. I also like to hang out iwth my twin boys and husband at the park or out to eat.

SBN:  I love reality shows too and I have twin girls and one son!  What is your favorite food?
MS:  I love food so much! Sushi is one of my favorites and pretty much anything really spicy, like Mexican or Indian food.

SBN:  I can't eat sushi at all, but love Mexican!!  I have ALWAYS wished I had magical powers and used them for good.  Did you (or do you) ever wish the same?  Or, maybe you are a lucky and do have magically powers.
MS: I believe in good and evil and that there is real power in those. My main belief is in God and prayer for power.

SBN:  I complete agree with you!  Do you have a favorite witch?
MS:  Hmmm, Idis, from my books is just a kook, but what entertainment she would be to have around. In other stories, I like The Wizards of Waverly Place.

SBN:  Idis is a kook, for sure!  What are you reading now and what are some of your favorite books/authors?
MS:  I am simultaneously reading Breaking Dawn and The Hunger Games. I know, I kno--I am late to the party :)

SBN:  Late to the party.....no. I still haven't' read The Hunger Games, either.  It is on my "to read" list!  Thank you so much for the interview Molly.

Look for a future review on Royal BeSwitched!

There Goes the Bride

My Rating: Must Read - I LOVED it!

Synopsis:  Happily ever after isn’t always what you expect…

Polly Atkins, a Londoner living in New York City, is headed back across the pond for her wedding, a grand affair that has her older sister, Bella, in a whirlwind of excitement. Bella can’t wait to take over the wedding plans—and neither can Polly’s best friend, Grace, whose life as a wife, housekeeper, and mother is making her feel older than her twenty-eight years. She’s desperate to see Polly settle down in the same city—and the same life.

The only one who isn’t bursting with enthusiasm is Polly. Which is why, before things can get any more chaotic, she calls the whole thing off and lets go of the most perfect man on the planet. There’s no way that Polly is going to tell anyone why she’s changed her mind. Some secrets are best kept hidden. But Grace and Bella are determined to get Polly and her fiancé back together if it’s the last thing they do. After all, solving someone else’s problems has got to be better than dealing with your own. . . .

My Review:  I absolutely loved There Goes the Bride.  It was a very "new" style of book to me.  The story is told by two people, and one of them is NOT Polly!  So there are actually three different stories inter-weaved together.  The book alternates between Bella, Polly's sister, and Grace, Polly's best friend.

Bella is the opposite of Polly.  She is a carter, slightly overweight and average height.  Polly is perfect in every way.  Bella tends to date "losers" and can't have children.  Polly is engaged to a "catch," Dev.  Grace is more like Polly.  Grace is perfect in every way, but in a miserable marriage.

In There Goes the Bride, will find a great story that unwinds as you read the book, a steamy affair, a bully of a husband (I didn't like Grace's husband), an unbelievable secret, a heroine (loved Bella!) and a hot (but hairy!) Irishman!

I don't want to give away the ending, but I was so shocked when I found out the secret Polly was keeping.  I was so happy for Bella and Grace - way to go girls!!!  There Goes the Bride would make an excellent summer read (or any time).  I just loved it.  Chick lit at is best, for sure.

I have never read any of Holly McQueen's books, but I can't wait to get my hand on them.  She has written three books (a series - The Adventures of Isabel Bookbinder):  The Glamorous (Double) Life of Isabel Bookbinder, Fabulously Fashionable, and Confetti Confidential.  Have you read them?  What did you think?

Meet the Author:  Holly McQueen is the author of three previous novels: Confetti ConfidentialFabulously Fashionable, and The Glamourous (Double) Life of Isabel Bookbinder. She lives in London.

You can connect with Holly on Goodreads, Twitter and/or Facebook.

Purchase the Book:  You can purchase There Goes the Bride at Amazon ($15.00 paperback, $10.98 Prime Members, $9.99 Kindle), Barnes & Noble (same prices) and Book Depository ($11.83).

Sea Change by Karen White

My Rating: A Great Read!

Synopsis: For Ava Whalen, a new marriage and a move to St. Simons Island means a new beginning. But what she doesn’t realize is that her marriage will take her on an unexpected journey into the deep recesses of her past that will transform her forever…

For as long as she can remember, Ava Whalen has struggled with a sense of not belonging, and now, at thirty-four, she still feels stymied by her family. Then she meets child psychologist Matthew Frazier, and thinks her days of loneliness are behind her. After a whirlwind romance, they impulsively elope, and Ava moves to Matthew’s ancestral home on St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia.

But after the initial excitement, Ava is surprised to discover that true happiness continues to elude her. There is much she doesn’t know about Matthew, including the mysterious circumstances surrounding his first wife’s death. And her new home seems to hold as many mysteries and secrets as her new husband. Feeling adrift, Ava throws herself into uncovering Matthew’s family history and that of the island, not realizing that she has a connection of her own to this place—or that her obsession with the past could very well destroy her future.

My Review: I was SO excited to read Sea Change. It takes place in one of my favorite little tucked away places - St. Simons Island, Georgia.  Have you ever been?

Sea Change is an amazing book.  It weaves several different stories into one.  I couldn't really figure any of them out.  Just when I thought I had, I really hadn't.  Karen White is able to take a story told in the early 1800's and link it to a modern day story.  There is family drama (lots of it is a really good way with each story line) mysterious pasts, and a whole lot of skeletons (as in family skeletons)!  I couldn't get through the book fast enough.

Sea Change takes place on St. Simons Island.  Karen White.....I am speechless (well typeless) on your remarkable ability to describe SSI perfectly.  Christ Church is a must see to believe if you ever visit.  You have to walk through the cemetery.  Cumberland Island is also mentioned in Sea Change.  That is another little tucked away island in Georgia.  JFK, Jr. got married on the island.  There are no vehicles and accessible by boat, that has very set hours and doesn't wait for you.  It is another beautiful island.

I discovered both islands when I lived in Jacksonville and my mom was visiting.  She wanted to see SSI so badly after reading Eugene Price books.  It really is a very special place for me with wonderful memories of the times my mother and I had.  We also spent a day on Cumberland Island during another one of her stays.  It was fabulous.  Wild horse roam the beach, old ruins, and trails to explorer.

Not only do I recommend picking up a copy of Sea Change, but I recommend a trip to SSI and Cumberland Island.  While you are it, you must stop by Savannah.  You won't be sorry!  Karen, thank you for such a great read and for capturing SSI and all its beauty in such detail.  I can't wait to read her other books.

Meet the Author: After playing hooky one day in the seventh grade to read Gone With the Wind, Karen White knew she wanted to be a writer—or become Scarlett O'Hara. In spite of these aspirations, Karen pursued a degree in business and graduated cum laude with a BS in Management from Tulane University. Ten years later, after leaving the business world, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a writer and wrote her first book. In the Shadow of the Moon was published in August, 2000. This book was nominated for the prestigious RITA award in 2001 in two separate categories. Her books have since been nominated for numerous national contests including another RITA, the Georgia Author of the Year Award and in 2008 won the National Readers’ Choice Award for Learning to Breathe.

Karen currently writes what she refers to as ‘grit lit’—southern women’s fiction—and has recently expanded her horizons into writing a mystery series set in Charleston. Her tenth novel, The Lost Hours, will be released in trade paperback by New American Library, a division of Penguin Publishing Group, in April 2009.

Karen hails from a long line of Southerners but spent most of her growing up years in London, England and is a graduate of the American School in London. She currently lives near Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and two teenaged children, and a spoiled Havanese dog (who appears in several of her books), Quincy. When not writing, she spends her time reading, singing, playing piano, chauffeuring children and avoiding cooking.

You can connect with Karen online or on Facebook.

Purchase It:  You can buy Sea Change at Amazon ($15.00; $10.20 Prime member or $9.99 Kindle version), Barnes & Noble ($15.00, 10.98 online or $9.99 Nook version),  and iBooks for $9.99.

Armchair BEA - Hello

I would LOVE to go the Book Expo America in NYC.  It just never seems to be due to the time of year.  I can't go anywhere during the first two weeks of the month.  The joys of working! At any rate, I am very excited to be participating in Armchair BEA for the first time.

Today we are asked to introduce ourselves.  So....here  we go!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

Where do you start with that question? I wear a lot of different hats...I am a mother of 3, a wife, director of accounting for a health care system, school advisor committee member, reviewer for Outnumbered 3 to 1 blog, book blogger, scrapbook blogger (this one get very little attention), sports mom....basically spread way to thin and wish I had "wife" to do everything I don't have time to do (including getting the kids on the bus in the morning!!).

I have been blogging for about two years.  I really struggled my first year.  I wanted to do so much more and just didn't have the time.  Not that I have the time now, but have accepted that I can only do so much and even though I would love to blog full-time, it won't pay the bills or make sure my kids homework is done!

Why did I get into blogging - I really loved Bookworm With a View and Mari was SO helpful in giving me advice and suggestions.  I still consider her a dear blogger friend and look forward to her posts (and emails).  She is such an anchored person and "has it all" in my mind.  We are in two different places in our lives, but are still able to connect.  She is just so awesome.  Thanks Mari!

What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2012?

I am currently reading Sea Change by Karen White.  I have about 100 pages left and can't wait to finish it!  I am listening to Heart of the Matter by Emily Griffin and really enjoying it.  On my Kindle...Fifty Shades of Grey.  I can't seem to get past chapter one.  I really can't wait to read it, I just seem to pick up my books over my Kindle!

Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.

I love sports, especially all of my kids sports.  My son is involved in several different sports and a lot of travel teams.  My twins are involved sports and dance.  I just love watching them performing.

I love to knit and scrapbook.  Again, if I could only have a "wife" to take care all my other duties.

My dream is to win the lotto, buy a house by the ocean and open a quaint little book store called - Seaside Book Nook!  Connected to that would be yarn store called - Seaside Yarns.  Connected to that would be a scrapbook store called - Peace, Love and Scrapbooking!  I would love it and given I won the lotto, I could afford to just have fun and not have to worry about making a profit!

What is your favorite feature on your blog (i.e. author interviews, memes, something specific to your blog)?

This is so easy - I LOVE giveaways for my followers and wish I could find a sponsor to defer the costs.  My favorite thing is when authors and publishers offer me a giveaway for my followers.

Where do you see your blog in five years?

In five years.....I would like Seaside Book Nook blog to have a handful of other reviewers so posts could be more frequent, a sponsor or two to host giveaways, publishers and authors asking me to read their books and write reviews.

Anyone out their interested in writing reviews on the blog?  Email me at seasidebooknook at yahoo dot com!

Which is your favorite post that you have written that you want everyone to read?

All of them!

If you could eat dinner with any author or character, who would it be and why?

What a great question.  I would actually need to have a dinner party because I just couldn't have dinner with one!  Rebecca Bloomberg, Sophie Kinsella, Miri (Magic in Manhattan series), Sarah Mlynowski, Stephanie Plum (including Lulu, Ranger and Grandma Mazer), Janet Evanovich, Melissa Fuller, Mia Thermopolis, and Meg Cabot.  I know that I am missing a ton of others, but this would be chick-lit party! I think this would be one crazy dinner party and I am sure I would be laughing all night.  I can't get enough of my chick-lit pals!

What literary location would you most like to visit? Why?

I love London and NYC as well as books that take place there.  Both cities have so much to offer.  I would love to relocate to London for a few years.  Could you imagine.  The experience and place my family and I could explorer.  One can dream, right?
****************************************
I would love for you to answer any and all of the questions above!  Have a great week!

About Last Night - Guest Post Ruthie Knox!

About Last Night, coming from Loveswept (Random House), June 11, 2012!

Sure, opposites attract, but in this sexy, smart eBook original romance from Ruthie Knox, they positively combust! When a buttoned-up banker falls for a bad girl, “about last night” is just the beginning.

Cath Talarico knows a mistake when she makes it, and God knows she’s made her share. So many, in fact, that this Chicago girl knows London is her last, best shot at starting over. But bad habits are hard to break, and soon Cath finds herself back where she has vowed never to go . . . in the bed of a man who is all kinds of wrong: too rich, too classy, too uptight for a free-spirited troublemaker like her.

Nev Chamberlain feels trapped and miserable in his family’s banking empire. But beneath his pinstripes is an artist and bohemian struggling to break free and lose control. Mary Catherine — even her name turns him on — with her tattoos, her secrets, and her gamine, sex-starved body, unleashes all kinds of fantasies. When blue blood mixes with bad blood, can a couple that is definitely wrong for each other ever be perfectly right? And with a little luck and a lot of love, can they make last night last a lifetime?

Guest Post: Without further ado......author, Ruthie Knox on About Last Night!

London Calling

You know, it never occurred to me that it was an unusual move to set a contemporary romance in London until I did it and people started telling me it was. Oops!

But also, yay!

I don’t mind being unusual, especially when it means that I get to share my love of London and the surrounding area with the world. (Also, my love of hot Englishmen.)

Way back in days of yore, before I was a romance writer, I was a grad student, and I earned a Ph.D. in modern British history. As part of my studies, I spent nine months living in Greenwich, a village suburb in southeast London, for nine months. The experience was both wonderful and awful. I spent nine months commuting by train to various metropolitan archives, sitting for eight hours five days a week in silent rooms where I took notes on a laptop, then commuting home.

I took up jogging with a vengeance, running every morning in Greenwich park near my flat. I took up Iyengar yoga at the neighborhood community center. I learned to cook. I went on hikes and visited museums and took weekend excursions to Bath, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Strasbourg, Nuremburg, and all a bunch of different places along the Thames. I read a ton of books from the library.

Nobody ever really talked to me.

I was lonely, but it was a very capable, sustainable sort of lonely, if that makes any sense. I sent a lot of e-mail, made a lot of phone calls, and had a number of visitors—including my then-male-friend, who became my boyfriend over the course of his visit, and then became my husband, which is a whole other story I’m not going to tell here, or probably anywhere, ever.

But the thing I spent hours doing—the thing that didn’t feel like a luxury at the time but was—the thing that I miss now—was watch people. People on train platforms, people in archive lunchrooms, people at the park, people at yoga classes, people in shops. I became, over that year, a student of people. I became a student of London, too, and I fell in love with it.

So my June release, About Last Night, is, in a small way, my love letter to London, with a lot of sneaky little references to things I adored about my short-term adoptive city. Maybe you can pick some of them up in this excerpt, set at the Canary Wharf location of Marks & Spencer.

"She was standing by the checkout, trying to decide whether Hello! or OK! magazine would make a better accompaniment to the cookies in the meantime, when she heard him.
“Tell me that’s not your dinner, Mary Catherine.”
Her arms broke out in goose bumps at the sound of his voice. Seriously, goose bumps. She was a junkie for this guy. It was humiliating.
“You want me to lie to you, City?”
Because she so badly wanted to look at him, she made herself wait. She placed her cookies on the checkout belt and started digging through her purse for a few pound coins. In her peripheral vision, she peeked at what he was buying. His basket was full of vegetables, eggs, bread, tomatoes. He was going to make something healthy.
She wondered if this was where he usually bought his groceries. It was the most convenient option for commuters—a quick hop off the train and then back on again—but too expensive for Cath. She used it strictly as a cookie stop and made the trip to the dodgy Tesco in Lewisham once a week for her real food. “No, I want you to eat properly.”
“Don’t worry, I’m going to have some milk with them.”  She did look at him then, just a glance over her shoulder. Enough to see the dimple, the green eyes, the charcoal pin-striped suit with a red tie. Her favorite banker.
She started running her mouth so she wouldn’t have to deal with her runaway emotions. “The best part is, they won’t even make me fat.” She handed her money to the cashier. “We Talaricos are a short, scrawny crowd, genetically incapable of gaining weight. My dad was pint-sized. It worked for him, though. He looked like a young Frank Sinatra, with these big blue eyes and a smile that had the ladies practically throwing their panties at him. At least, that’s what Mom always said. It’s kind of hard to imagine anyone throwing panties at your own father.” After accepting her change, she tossed her purchase in a bag and finally turned around to face him.
It really wasn’t fair. He had to be the only man alive who was always more attractive in the flesh than in the imagination, and he was giving her a look. She’d seen that look before. They’d both been naked at the time and he’d been . . . mmm. Her goose bumps got goose bumps.
“Let me make you dinner.”
How many times in her life had a man offered to cook dinner for her? With vegetables, even? Zero, that was how many.
No dates, she reminded herself. No emotions. Just sex. But it was hard to remember why when he was standing in front of her being all sexy and friendly and sexy.
The obvious solution was to refuse to look at him. She kept her eyes on the floor while he packed his groceries into a bag and thanked the cashier.
Then he touched her, a light caress of his hand at her waist that flipped her on switch and started her whole body vibrating. “Mary Catherine?”
“No.” Just don’t look up. “I can’t. No.”
He tipped her chin up with one finger, forcing her to meet his eyes. A slow smile spread over his face, devastating her defenses. “If I didn’t know better, I’d begin to think you don’t like me.”
“Who says I like you?” But the question didn’t come out as ballsy as she wanted it to, not when he was close enough to make her skin itch.
He chuckled. “How many times did you come last night?” he asked in a low voice.
Three. “I’m not answering that question.”
“You don’t have to. I remember every one. You like me fine.” "

Meet the Author:  Ruthie Knox figured out how to walk and read at the same time in the second grade, and she hasn’t looked up since.  She spent her formative years hiding romance novels in her bedroom closet to avoid the merciless teasing of her brothers and imagining scenarios in which someone who looked remarkably like Daniel Day Lewis recognized her well-hidden sex appeal and rescued her from middle-class Midwestern obscurity.  After graduating from Grinnell College with an English and history double major, she earned a Ph.D. in modern British history that she’s put to remarkably little use.  These days, she writes contemporary romance in which witty, down-to- earth characters find each other irresistible in their pajamas, though she freely admits this has yet to happen to her. Perhaps she needs more exciting pajamas.  Her debut novel, Ride with Me, came out with Loveswept (Random House) in February.

Connect with Ruthie on her website, Facebook and Twitter.  Also, check out what others are saying at Random House and Goodreads.

Purchase It:  You can preorder About Last Night, releases on June 11th for only $2.99 from Amazon, Barnes & Nobles and iBooks.

How about a giveaway!!!
Random House has provided me one preview copy of About Last Night through NetGalley.  The winner will have to have a NetGalley account to download the book.  Contest ends June 11th at midnight (EST).  Besides having a NetGalley account, all you have do is answer one of the question below.

Have you ever spent a long time living abroad on your own? Do you have a love affair with a foreign city? What about it do you like to remember now, looking back?
