Market Street Guest Post

Synopsis:  From Anita Hughes, author of Monarch Beach, comes Market Street, a delicious story of a department store heiress, her messy marriage, and her passion for food

Cassie Blake seems to lead a charmed life as the heiress to Fenton's, San Francisco's most exclusive department store. But when she discovers her husband, Aidan, a handsome UC Berkeley professor, has had an affair with a student, she flees to the comfort of her best friend Alexis's Presidio Heights mansion, where she wonders if she should give their marriage one more chance.

Whether or not she can forgive Aidan is not the only choice Cassie has to make. Cassie's mother is eager to have her oversee the opening of Fenton's new Food Emporium, which Fenton’s hopes will become San Francisco's hottest gourmet shopping destination. Cassie’s true passion has always been food, not fashion, and Cassie suspects her mother might be trying to lure her into the Fenton's fold by entrusting her with such an exciting opportunity. And then there is James, the architect designing the Emporium, who is quietly falling in love with her…

Meet the Author:  ANITA HUGHES is also the author of Monarch Beach. She attended UC Berkeley’s Masters in Creative Writing Program, and has taught Creative Writing at The Branson School in Ross, California. Hughes lives in Dana Point, California, where she is at work on her next novel.

I am so excited to bring you a guest interview with the amazing Anita Hughes!

Favorite color, food, drink and animal?
My favorite food is frozen yoghurt – especially Cake Batter, Chocolate Malt and Peanut Butter.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love to walk along the beach with my dog. The Southern California coast is spectacular and on a clear day I can see Catalina Island.

When/Why did you start writing?
I started writing when I was a child. I loved to read and wanting to write myself just came naturally. I particularly liked thinking up the name of characters and writing first chapters!

Where/When do you feel most comfortable writing?
I write first thing in the morning, and then sporadically all day whenever I get a chance. In the evening I revise the day’s work and think up what I’m going to write the next day. I generally write on the loveseat in my bedroom which is very peaceful and has a lovely view of the golf course.

Have you ever been inspired by another author? If so, who?
I’ve always been inspired by authors! When I was a girl I read SEVENTEEN and was inspired by the short stories. When I was in college I was inspired by so many great women writers: George Eliot, George Sand, Mary McCarthy. Now I am inspired by any writer who writes a book that makes me want to stop everything I’m doing and just read.

Is it hard to let the characters go once you complete a novel?
It’s very hard to let characters go! I often find I’m thinking about them months after I finish writing a book. They become very real and I am genuinely concerned for their welfare.

Where does your inspiration for a story come from?
Sometimes my inspiration is just a nugget that grows into something more. My characters inspire me and eventually they tell their own story.

Do you have a favorite author?
I have so many favorite authors – I read constantly. I love Somerset Maugham, I read everything he wrote and I think I learned more from him than any other writer. I adore Penny Vincenzi. When I read her books, I am completely happy.

The Love Shack - TLC Book Tours + Giveaway!

Synopsis:  Return to USA TODAY bestselling author Christie Ridgeway's Crescent Cove, California, where the magic of summer can last forever…

Globe-trotting photojournalist Gage Lowell spent carefree childhood summers in Crescent Cove. Now that he desperately needs some R & R, he books a vacation at Beach House No. 9—ready to soak up some sun and surprise old friend and property manager Skye Alexander. Their long-distance letters got him through a dangerous time he can't otherwise talk about. But when he arrives, the tightly wound beauty isn't exactly happy to see him.

Skye knows any red-blooded woman would be thrilled to spend time with gorgeous, sexy Gage. But she harbors secrets of her own, including that she might just be a little bit in love with him. And she's convinced the restless wanderer won't stay long enough for her to dare share her past—or dream of a future together. Luckily for them both, summer at Crescent Cove has a way of making the impossible happen….

My Review:  I really enjoyed The Love Shack.  It is the third book in the Beach House No. 9 Novels, but it is a stand-alone book as well.  I can't wait to go back and read the first two: Beach House No. 9 and Bungalow Nights

I loved the setting (take me to the beach any day!), the characters, the mystery/family legend behind the story and how I was drawn in from the first chapter.  The Love Shack takes place in Crescent Cove - I have no idea if it is a real town or not, but I would love to visit/live there.  The author, Christie Ridgway, does such an amazing job describing the cove that I could picture it so clearly in my mind.....and wanted to be transported there!

The characters in The Love Shack are so much fun (and the guys are pretty hunky!).  My favorite is a tie between Polly and Skye.  Their friendship was very strong and they were so supportive of each other and seemed to have a ton of fun together.  The twins Griffin and Gage are two wild, globe-trotting photojournalists.  As kids they spent summers in Crescent Cove in Beach House No. 9.  They spent summers with Skye, whose family managed the beach property.  Skye and Gage have been "pen pals" and it was Skye's letters that kept Gage going in a very dangerous situation and Gage's letters that kept Skye going as she faced her demons from a recent break in.  They are brought back together for Griffin's wedding.  This was predictable, but I still loved it!

Skye's family legend of lost jewels is part of the story too. The mystery is unraveled during the story.  It was great how the legend tied all the stories going on in The Love Shack together (don't want to give too much away here).  I thought it was great what becomes of the family jewels too!  Perfect ending.....but I am hoping there might be another book coming?  The good news, is I still have Beach House No. 9 and Bungalow Nights to read!

The Love Shack is a very quick and engaging book.  I recommend The Love Shack and looking forward to other two books (and hopefully a 4th!).

Meet the Author:  An avid reader, Christie began writing romances in the fifth grade when she wrote stories starring her teen idol (and herself as the heroine, of course!). These stories remain intact, in a locked box with a mercifully missing key.

After college as an English major, she became a technical writer in the computer field for a number of years. That led her into computer programming, a geeky profession that was not-so-surprisingly satisfying for the daughter and sister of accountants.

Christie married her college sweetheart and gave up     full-time programming when her first son was born. A visit from an old friend prompted her to take up writing again, and she joined her local chapter of Romance Writers of America two weeks later.

Thanks to the camaraderie and support she found there, Christie persevered, making her first sale to Harlequin. When another son joined her family, she continued to write, juggling motherhood, wifehood and the writing life. She makes her home in Southern California, doing work that she loves thanks to the support of her math-teacher husband and their two sons.

If Christie is not at her computer writing contemporary romances, she is washing clothes or folding clothes or washing some more clothes or folding yet another load of clothes. She does a lot of laundry due to active sons, as well as a husband who likes to surf, bike and fix things!

While the yellow Labrador retriever, the cat, the fish and the tortoise do not add to the laundry piles, they do add to the excitement. As often as possible, though, Christie escapes it all with — what else? — a romance.

Saving Saffron Sweeting Guest Post

Synopsis: Grace Palmer's British friends all think she's living the American Dream. But her design business is floundering and when she discovers her husband is cheating with her best client, she panics and flees home to England.

The tranquil village of Saffron Sweeting appears to be a good place for Grace to lick her wounds, but the community is battling its own changes. Reluctantly, Grace finds herself helping her new neighbours as they struggle to adjust and save their businesses. However, not everyone has the same opinion on what's good for the village. The charismatic new man in her life may have one speculative eye on Grace, but the other is firmly on profit. How will she navigate the tricky path between her home and her happiness?

With gentle humour and generous helpings of British tea and cake, Saving Saffron Sweeting explores one woman's need to define herself through her career and community, before she can figure out who should be by her side.

Meet the Author:  British by birth, Pauline Wiles moved to California eight years ago and, apart from a yearning for afternoon tea and historic homes, has never looked back. Her work has been published by House of FiftyOpen Exchange and Alfie Dog FictionSaving Saffron Sweeting has reached the quarter finals in the Romance category of this year’s Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award

Saving Saffron Sweeting is her first novel. I am so excited to share with you all an interview with Pauline!

Favorite color, food, drink and animal?
• Purple
• Anything Italian, especially pasta and cheese, followed by an English treat like a custard tart or sticky toffee pudding.
• Earl Grey Tea, or any kind of black tea. With milk, of course.
• I love pelicans, find ducks hilarious, and can’t resist dogs hanging out of car windows.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I’m a slow but steady runner. I recently discovered Zumba and love it, although the bits that are supposed to wiggle don’t, and vice versa! I love to browse interior design blogs and décor shops for ideas. My husband wishes I’d just leave the house alone, but that’s not going to happen any time soon.

When/Why did you start writing?
I was a compulsive reader as a child and devoured the entire works of Enid Blyton, from Mallory Towers to The Faraway Tree. By the age of ten or eleven, I was eagerly creating my own short stories. But this faded during (high) school years and I didn’t start writing again until I was running my own business and promoting it through blogging and magazine articles. The business didn’t take off, but numerous people told me they enjoyed my writing. What’s more, it came fairly easily to me. I finally paid attention to my childhood passion and began working seriously on Saving Saffron Sweeting about two years ago.

Where/When do you feel most comfortable writing?
I wrote most of Saving Saffron Sweeting sitting on the sofa in our living room with my laptop. I’ve now moved to a desk in our home office to stave off a few aches and pains. I’ve never felt the need to go to a coffee shop or library to write, I can just get on with it at home. I’m definitely a morning person: if I can be productive in the first couple of hours, it sets the tone for the whole day.

Have you ever been inspired by another author? If so, who?
Many, many authors. Every time I read a great book, I feel like giving up, as I know I’ll never be that good! I love the descriptive style of Joanne Harris and the intelligent entertainment achieved by Marian Keyes.

Is it hard to let the characters go once you complete a novel?
A little. I don’t plan to write a sequel to Saving Saffron Sweeting, but I think the next novel will be set in the same village with a bit of character overlap. Some of the minor characters are telling me they have more to say.

Where does your inspiration for a story come from?
Either from personal ponderings - what if this happened, what would I do - or often, bizarre news stories. Truth really is stranger than fiction. I often find myself thinking, why on earth did they do that? Or, that if I put that plot in a novel, no-one would believe it.

Do you have a favorite author?
I read all Jane Austen’s books in the order she wrote them, and was relieved to find some were much better than others - so she wasn’t a genius all the time. The sharp but subtle humor in Pride and Prejudice is wonderful, and personally, I think the Bennet parents rather stole the show. And, as mentioned above, I’ve read more or less everything by Joanne Harris and Marian Keyes.

When Can You Start?

Synopsis: In a tough job market, only a select few succeed at the interview process. What sets them apart? As President of Shimmering Resumes, Paul Freiberger helps job seekers rise above the competition and get hired. Now he s giving you the tools to ace the interview and win the job. You will learn how to:

  • Be ready for The Only Question You Must Be Able to Answer
  • Not tell the interviewer about your weaknesses
  • Answer any trick question or oddball question
  • Ask the right questions
  • Be confident in any interview situation
  • Avoid interview mistakes
  • Negotiate the salary you deserve

Use the practical, effective, and proven techniques in this book to convert We ll be in touch to those four words everyone wants to hear: When can you start?

My Review:  What a wonderful book.  If you are currently interviewing or will be soon, When Can You Start? is just the book you want to pick in order to Ace the Interview and Win the Job!  Less than two years ago, I was in the job seeking market and I 100% believe in the advice in When Can You Start?  It would have been nice to have this book to confirm what I was doing was correct.

Over the past year and half I have interview many candidates for different positions on my team and let me tell you there are too many people out there that have no idea How to Ace the Interview and Win the Job.  When Can You Start? begins with the importance of research.  This is so true.  One person I was interviewing kept discussing all the ways he could save us money on our taxes....we are a tax-exempt health care system and we don't pay taxes!

More and more companies are conducting first round phone interviews.  There is a chapter designated to phone interviews.  Believe it or not, I have two DOs related to phone interviews: be at your phone at the designated time and don't have children or other distracting noise in the background.  When Can You Start? can help you ace that phone interview.

Through out the entire book, I could have added "my own observations" and "yes, this really happened during an interview" stories.  The employer/interviewer "tactics" described in the When Can You Start? my company uses.  I agree with the advice on how to be prepared for such things as you go through the interview process.

Bottom line - if you are in job market, When Can You Start? is a must have book.  Also, think of all those college and high school students graduating this spring....what an excellent gift.

The Good Daughter

Synopsis:  Love was given to all, except herself . . .

Kit Brennan has always been the most grounded of her sisters. A Catholic school English teacher for seventeen years and a constant giver, her decisions have been sound—just not very satisfying. Her fortieth birthday is right around the corner, causing Kit to consider some wilder notions, like skipping right past the love and marriage to raising a child all by herself . . .

A girls’ weekend away is just the reprieve Kit needs from school, Mr. Wrongs, and life-changing decisions. It’s there that she meets a man who’s dangerous; a man who challenges who she thought she was, or rather should be. Kit wants to indulge herself this once, but with one of her students in crisis and the weight of her family’s burdens weighing heavy on her heart, Kit isn’t sure if now is the time to let her own desires take flight . . .

My Review: I really enjoyed The Good Daughter!  This is the second book in the Brennan Sisters series, but can be read as a stand alone.  I really liked Kit in the first book, The Good Woman and was so excited she was the main focus of The Good Daughter!

Kit is the daughter that is known as being the one that always makes the right decision, the peace keeper in the family, does the right thing.....the good one!  But we find out Kit has a secret side too!  While away, she walks on the wild side and she knows her family will not approve. Keep in mind Kate is single, forty and wants to be a mother.

Kit also struggles with her mother losing the battle to cancer.  Be prepared to have some kleenex near by.  There are other twists and turns in the book regarding a student, that I didn't see coming.

The Good Daughter is a quick read that was very enjoyable!  Perfect for weekend read.

Deadweather and Sunrise: The Chronicles of Egg, Book 1

Synopsis:  A stunning middle-grade debut--full of heart, humor, and nonstop action

It's tough to be thirteen, especially when somebody's trying to kill you.

Not that Egg's life was ever easy, growing up on sweaty, pirate-infested Deadweather Island with no company except an incompetent tutor and a pair of unusually violent siblings who hate his guts.

But when Egg's father hustles their family off on a mysterious errand to fabulously wealthy Sunrise Island, then disappears with the siblings in a freak accident, Egg finds himself a long-term guest at the mansion of the glamorous Pembroke family and their beautiful, sharp-tongued daughter Millicent. Finally, life seems perfect.

Until someone tries to throw him off a cliff.

Suddenly, Egg's running for his life in a bewildering world of cutthroat pirates, villainous businessmen, and strange Native legends. The only people who can help him sort out the mystery of why he's been marked for death are Millicent and a one-handed, possibly deranged cabin boy.

Come along for the ride. You'll be glad you did.

My Review: I really, really liked Deadweather and Sunrise: The Chronicles of Egg, Book 1.  My favorite character was Egg (of course!).  He was adventurous for his age.  He was able to survive pirates and floated on wood from the ship to an island.  On the island he realizes Guts (a pirate kid) made it to the island too.  They become a team and fight off an army of soldiers who were trying to take Egg's land.  The head of the army wants Egg's land because he thinks there is a buried treasurer on the land.

I really like Burn Healy, one of the pirates. He gave Egg and Guts weapons to help fight against the soldiers.  Guts was pretty feisty.  He was not even scared of the soldiers.  He was a good fighter even though he only had one hand.

I would recommend Deadweather and Sunrise: The Chronicles of Egg, Book 1 to middle school boys and girls (5th - 8th grade). I am giving the book to my school library, since so many kids in my class want to read it too!  I am so excited I have Book 2 - New Lands, so I can keep reading more about Egg's adventures.  Consider me, hooked!

Meet the Author:  Geoff Rodkey is the author of the Chronicles of Egg middle grade comedic adventure series and the Emmy-nominated screenwriter of such hit films as Daddy Day Care, RV, and the Disney Channel's Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas.

Geoff grew up in Freeport, Illinois and began his writing career on his high school newspaper. While in college, Geoff was an editor of both the Harvard Lampoon and the Let's Go travel guide series. His early writing credits include the educational video game Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, the non-educational MTV series Beavis and Butt-head, and Comedy Central's Politically Incorrect.

Geoff's debut novel, Deadweather and Sunrise, is the first book in the Chronicles of Egg trilogy. The final volumes in the series, New Lands and Blue Sea Burning, will be published by Putnam in 2013 and 2014.

Geoff currently lives in New York City with his wife and three sons. They do not have any pets, mostly because the whole experience with the goldfish was just too upsetting.

Purchase it:  You can purchase Deadweather and Sunrise - The Chronicles of Egg, Book 1 online from Amazon for $7.99.
